Consumer Warning Checklist:

Understanding what to look for when hiring a plumbing contractor can save you from being victimized by contractors who are unlicensed or performing work “outside” of their license.

Make sure the contractor is licensed and has general liability insurance.

Check Box

As per the California Contractors State License Board, all contractor advertisements, whether it be an ad in the phone book or newspaper, a flyer that shows up at your front door, or the company’s name on the side of a truck, must have the contractor’s state license number. Before you hire a contractor, ask to see a copy of his license.

Check Box

Ask to see a copy of the general liability insurance to verify that the contractor has insurance. In California, general liability insurance is not required. If your contractor damages your property and doesn’t carry general liability insurance, you could end up paying for the damages.

What type or classification of license to look for when you have a job that involves plumbing?

Check Box

When asking for proof of the contractor’s license, look on the license for his “C-36”  classification.  This “C-36” classification proves that you are hiring a knowledgeable plumbing tradesman.  Hiring a plumber without his “C-36” license means that he is not properly licensed and could be very costly and unsafe for you in the long run.  Since plumbing is a very technical trade that involves working with explosive gas and water, it’s extremely important to hire a “C-36” licensed plumbing professional that will protect your home from fire or flood.

A general building “B” license does not allow a contractor to do plumbing work unless he has both a “B” license AND a specialty “C-36” plumbing license.  A general building “B” license by itself allows the contractor to be the “overseer” or superintendent only.
